OMAHA (DTN) -- Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.4 million head on June 1, 2025. The inventory was 1% below June 1, 2024, USDA NASS reported on Friday.

Placements in feedlots during May totaled 1.89 million head, 8% below 2024. Net placements were 1.82 million head. During May, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 335,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 275,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 450,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 516,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 230,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 80,000 head.

Marketings of fed cattle during May totaled 1.76 million head, 10% below 2024.

Other disappearance totaled 62,000 head during May, unchanged from 2024.

DTN ANALYSIS

"Friday's Cattle on Feed report should be received as another bullish feather for the market to tuck inside its hat," said DTN Livestock Analyst ShayLe Stewart. "The only minute difference that the actual data had compared to pre-report estimates was in the placement data, which came in 2 percentage points lighter (1,886,000 head) than originally assumed. Of the major feeding states, it was interesting to note the stark differences in placements between the states. Nebraska placements were steady compared to a year ago, Kansas placements were down 3%, Iowa placements were up 1%, but Texas placements were down 17% compared to a year ago, and Oklahoma placements were down 22% compared to a year ago. It's likely that both Texas and Oklahoma are seeing such drastic drops in placements because of the import ban on all Mexican cattle."
